EM Weekly Fund Flows Monitor Taiwan India led foreign buying in August, while Korea saw most FII selling
Goldman Sachs reports that Taiwan and India led emerging market foreign equity buying in August (+US$9.5bn and +US$3bn, respectively), while Korea experienced significant foreign selling (-US$8.8bn). Following July's drawdown, EM and Asian active mutual funds gained 4-5% in August, with the majority outperforming their benchmarks.
Goldman Sachs' weekly fund flows monitor highlights that emerging and Asian equity mutual funds rebounded 4-5% in August after a July drawdown, with 60% of EM funds and 70% of Asian funds beating benchmarks. In August, foreign institutional inflows concentrated in Taiwan (+US$9.5bn) and India (+US$3bn), whereas Korea faced severe foreign selling (-US$8.8bn). Global equity funds saw US$9.2bn in net inflows on the week, led by GEM funds (+US$2.3bn) and Japan (+US$2.7bn), while US funds experienced US$4.4bn in net outflows. Positioning data shows EM funds remain most overweight Brazil and Mexico while underweight Taiwan and Korea, particularly cutting exposure to North Asian Technology Hardware and Semiconductors. Additionally, the upcoming FTSE GEIS rebalancing on September 18 is expected to drive over US$10bn in gross two-way flows across EM markets.
