Vietnam Sustained Broad Gains in August Activity and Higher Inflation

Vietnam's August macroeconomic activity sustained moderate gains, led by steady retail sales and tech exports alongside a pickup in state investment. Goldman Sachs reports that Vietnam's activity indicators maintained moderate momentum in August 2026. Headline industrial production rose 0.5% mom sa (14.4% yoy), decelerating after three months of rapid growth, while retail sales rose 0.8% mom sa. Public investment accelerated meaningfully, with state investment rising 27.2% yoy. On the external side, exports grew 0.4% mom sa supported by tech and machinery, but imports contracted 1.5% mom sa, widening the seasonally adjusted trade deficit to -US$3.9bn. Meanwhile, headline CPI inflation accelerated to 4.9% yoy, topping consensus on higher fuel costs, while core inflation remained stable at 4.6% yoy.
